removing adhesive from painted surface

I have some pinstripes on the car ,and one side was peeling.Decided to remove and replace.When I took off the drivers side they pretty much fell off,leaving little residue.I like the look of the car w/o the pinstripes so I decided to remove the other side.They came off....1 inch at a time!!Left behind a lot of residue.Anyone have a suggestion how to get the residue off without damaging the paint? Alcohol(Crown Royal) ?,peanut butter?,80 grit sandpaper ? The car has had a repaint long ago,no idea what type paint,etc..

3M makes an adhesive remover. You may want to try an inconspicuous place with acetone or paint thinner to see of the finish can be waxed back to life.

You might want to try "goo-be-gone". (spelling??) It usually works pretty well.

I used isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth and got it off.It was slow going but it is all gone.I immediately waxed those areas,feeling that I probably removed the existing wax. I will clay bar the whole car and rewax before spring.I really think the body lines show up better w/o the pinstripes,I wish I had removed them before now.
I was afraid to use the 3m or the ''goof off'' products for fear of ruining paint.I would have just put back the pinstripes if the residue didnt come off.And I didnt use up my Crown Royal or my peanut butter!

Goof-off and acetone are strong stuff and would probably take the paint off. Alcohol was a good choice, "Gunk" makes a bug and tar remover that is good and won't hurt the paint. Woodford Reserve might work and tastes great too.

Eucalyptus oil is very good for that purpose too - but I don't know how common it is 'up over' (compared with 'down under').
