Re: If you had a choice
So possibly two issues, motor mount height to top of stock air cleaner (for flat hood), and oil pan clearance around/over cross member. I plan on install new mounts, the old ones are oil soaked and saging.

Re: If you had a choice
i have done this twice. Installed a 2 liter into a 70 and a 71. Didnt change the cross member. The dizzy might be an issue. Move it to the block. Turning it might help the clearance issue at the top.

Re: If you had a choice
With the 2000 you will have to rotate the distributor so it points forward, so it does not foul the hood.seabeelt wrote:Are there any obstacles with installing the 1800 or 2000 in order to maintain the flat hood? Definitely want to keep that look.
The hood's center reinforcement may hit the timing belt cover, on my car I notched the center of the TB cover for a bit of extra clearance.
I had put 2 liters into early cars with an stock and also a 2000 crossmember, and I do not think it makes a difference. On my current car I slotted the engine mount to engine block holes to lower the engine a few more mm.

Re: If you had a choice
2Ltr under a flat bonnet, clearance sounds a lot like a problem I've heard of before with installing the larger lump in Fiat AC Coupes.
The engine mount from a Volvo 240 diesel RHS can be used, it's shorter and a touch harder.
240 1979–1987 Engine Mount Diesel Driver
Part No. 1229805
Scroll a down the page a little and you'll see it.
The locating lugs need to be ground off and can be shimmed up a little if needed.

Cross member and engine mount to engine brackets remain the same with this mod.
The distributor can be an issue but as mentioned by vandor, turn the dizzy housing to face the fingers forward or you can go dizzy into block type if you have one handy.

Hi!
If you need more adjustment clearence you can use Volvo 140 engine mounts, they are even lower than the one to the 240 and you can shimm them upp to the hight you want so the oil sump goes free of the crossmember and gives more space under the hood!
They are 40mm high, 65mm wide, almost the same weight as the TC engine, the 240 is 48 or 50mm high and 75mm wide!
I was born i the wrong country,Volvo country Sweden instead of Fiat country Italy!

Great info there Alf!131lover wrote: They are 40mm high, 65mm wide, almost the same weight as the TC engine, the 240 is 48 or 50mm high and 75mm wide!
Like most engine mounts they will sag over time and i'd imagine the 240 mounts would settle down by 8 or 10mm.
The measurements you've provided are a good reference point for one to start measuring from standard and make the choice, 40mm or 50mm.

Re: If you had a choice
I believe there is a taller Volvo engine mount that works with the x member and that you need to reindex the dist for hood clearance.

Oh sorry, I was thinking for his 3rd option which was the 2000 with the 1800 head.vandor wrote:Not if he uses high-compression pistons.Weelan wrote:Wouldn't he need the 1800's head for building the 2000?

Re: If you had a choice
So if I go with the 2L , no timing belt cover and use Mark's electronic ignition (instead of twisting the dizzy) and maybe some shorter engine mounts and/or slotting the bracket on the motor, I should have enough clearance?

Re: If you had a choice
I would use the cover, just notch it. A stone under the timing belt can ruin your day.seabeelt wrote:So if I go with the 2L , no timing belt cover and use Mark's electronic ignition (instead of twisting the dizzy) and maybe some shorter engine mounts and/or slotting the bracket on the motor, I should have enough clearance?

Yes, it will fit, it has been done many times before.
