Project creep... AGAIN!

Post by maytag »

Hey all....

So, I've been liquidating all of my Fiat stuff, to make room (and time) for my latest acquisition. But as I got right down to it, I just couldn't part with my "driver".
SO, I decided to just add a few minor touches and drive it this year.
Basically, the plan was to de-smog it. Just pull off all the smog equipment (my car no longer needs emissions control in Utah) and clean up the bay.
well.. then I decided that rather than trying to plug all the emissions crap, I needed to add the dual carbs. I've got a set I was planning to sell, so not a huge deal.
except they're 44's. They were planned for my big-valve, Big Cam, Big-Port, Hi-Comp monster 2L motor, for which I already sold all the parts. So I can't really dump them onto the stock 1800 I've got.
So I decided I'd add a cam on the intake side and put a header on the other end to free-up the breathing. unfortunately I already sold my cams... so I'm buying a cam.
Well, I've also got a nicer head-casting than the one that's on it, with a recent "freshen-up", so I'll swap the head out.

While I'm at it, my trans is missing 1st gear, so I'm putting in another trans. and while I'm in that deep, I'll put on a lightened flywheel (I already sold my alu flywheel....anyone got one to spare?)
And if I'm into it that far, I might as well put in some Hi-Comp pistons... which I ALSO already sold. :?

SO that means I'm pulling the motor. And of course, I need to get rid of all that crappy wiring left over from the PO... so I'll be rewiring the engine-bay.
And since I've got the trans out, I'm going to pull out the seats and carpets and redo the carpet, change-out the seats for my low-back ones. They'll of course need a cross-bar added to the rollbar behind the seatbacks to attach the 4-point harnesses to, so that's on the list... and I need to build my shelf in place of the rear seats.

as long as the motor is out, I'm going to put in the springs and shocks I've been rat-holing for 2 years.
And I need to get my wheels refinished.

All of that because I decided to desmog it.
I just hope I can get it done before spring! :!:

what the hell is wrong with me?

I don't think there's anything wrong with you, it all sounds so logical

DOH!
I wish I had thought to take some "before" pics. :|

I got to do some work on the car over the weekend. Motor & trans are out, engine-bay is effectively gutted, with only the clutch-cable and the brake m/c & booster remaining.

I've started gutting the interior, and I've disassembled much of the motor. I would've stripped it altogether and taken the crank & etc to the machinist, except I'm still undecided on the flywheel. :? this is a tough call for me, 'cuz I know what I WANT to do..... but it's contrary to what I think I OUGHT to do.

I think this week I'll get it on blocks and swap springs & shocks, and review the front-end / steering parts.

I am trying to find the wrong here... as everyone else mentioned, seems rather logical to me as well. Nothing wrong with you at all :)

What kind of paint did you use? Is/was it resistant to brake fluid? No matter what I do, I manage to spill some on the calipers and the paint ran so I ended up leaving them original. I like the colour on the calipers though.
