Delete center resonator

Post by scampbel98 »

I'm considering running headers (Vicks), cat (or test pipe :), no center resonator and ANSA dual tip.
Does anyone make a center resonator delete pipe? Anyone running this kind of setup?

That would be called a test pipe. The resonator is what gives the deep sound.

Kinda sorta.
I have headers and recently had some exhaust work done. At the point where the downpipe goes from two to one,I chopped there and went 2 inch back to the Ansa twin tip. No resonator but do put an extra hanger somewheres before the pipe goes over the axle. It needs the extra support. The sound is louder without the resonator for sure but tolerable. I recently drove it a couple of hours one way to visit a friend and it didn't bother the ears.(after 25 years of chainsaws and helicopters I'm a bit deaf anyways) Think it was about 8- 10 feet of pipe and a couple of hours labour.

Come to think of it, that's about exactly what I got.

Had the second/center resonator removed, Vick's (or possibly IAP, 4-2-1 headers) and an Ansa dual tip purchased from the now defunct LinneaRossa.

I can tell you from personal experience, that removing the second resonator did NOTHING to remove from the "deep" sound that some owners here have mentioned. Maybe i'm just deaf to that particular sound range...who knows! It would be hard to argue that you're not getting a more "free-flow" system with it removed, in my opinion.

The Ansa tip....well, I really love the way it looks and have no plans on replacing it. I'm sure that as far as pure performance is concerned, you may do better with other types out there. That's your call.

Incidently, I am close to completely going full Allison's! In other words, his stepper header, full 2 1/2" exhaust, all the way back to the Ansa. It is designed around not having the second resonator (and with/without the cat.) in place as well.

Good luck.

BTW Vicks Header Collector is one of the worst I've seen you should take a look inside the header before
buying it then you will see what i am talking about .

My exhaust goes straight back to the Monza twin tip from where the two headers turn into one. It's loud, but not obnoxiously so, and the sound is quite good. I agree about the hanger being needed to keep the tubing off the rear axle. Mine needs adjustment, as it bangs against the axle at times.

I've noticed that the Patagonia wearing dog walkers in my neighborhood seem to think that I'm going faster than I am in my Spider. More than once I've stopped and asked those who yelled "slow down" how fast they thought I was going. I've never got a straight answer. I've asked to see their "bio speedometer", and really pissed off some menopausal poodle owners.

at 38 years old I can finally keep it below 30 in the neighborhood, but sound=speed to many around here.

@Daniel
I've got what I call a Franken motor...
1.8L Block, not sure of year, bored out to 85mm. (the old pistons literally shook in the cylinders)
2.0L FI head (nice cause the EGR stuff is already blocked off - compressoin i calculate to 10.1:1)
Vicks 85mm domed pistons
Valve job - nothing special
Stock valves
1800 single plane manifold
Weber 32/36 DFEV
stock Electronic ignition
toyota MR2 plug wires (take a look - they work great)
All emissions stuff removed
Exhaust - stock 4:1 manifold, mangnaflow cat, previous center, and ANSA dual tip

On mine, after removing the central resonator the car sounds like Honda Civic. I look inside of the resonator what was installed by the PO in the car and the pass thru hole was only 1” diameter. I assume is an after market resonator. I did order a 2 ¼” x 12 bottle resonator and I just can’t wait to see the deep sound. My rear muffler is also some after market one.

Has anyone replaced their resonator with a glass pak? Results?

I'm pretty sure mine is shot.
