Question about automatic spider

Post by sida555 »

Never driven a auto spider. How is it ? Reliability of the auto trans ? What to look for if I'm looking for a auto. Already got a 1980 manual thinking of a second one in auto.

If shifted, as needed, the automatic tranny is quite quick. Three speeds, but shifts fast, without loss of torque. First gear is not as low as it is in manual cars, but responsive enough.
The transmission is a Chevrolet Turbo-Hydramatic 180. All of the Turbo-Hydramatic trannys were very dependable - kinda hard to screw up, all in all. With wear, they can slip when shifting, but any problems can usually be easily discovered by driving the vehicle. Should have smooth, strong shifts, each time,...Check fluid level and color. And check for any leaks, of course (front, rear, pass. side shifter shaft).
My stock '79, with auto, struggled along with the 28/32 ADHA for a long time, and did 'OK'- kinda 'doggy'. With a single plane manifold, 32/36 DFEV and high voltage ignition, the car performs great with an auto tranny. All that has ever been done to mine was external seal replacement, due to a shifter-shaft seal leak.
Can't think of anything else, right off,...best of luck shopping!

Does anyone know what the part number is, or where I can find a kickdown bracket for a 79 automatic carbureted car? Maybe a photo of one installed? I greatly need help

I own one and have also owned another with automatic. The transmissions are extremely solid and I have had no internal issues. I had one bad shift module which was easy to get and easy to replace.

They shift very well, but I've found the transmission kick-down/passing gear is a bit sluggish for my taste. With only three gears, it gets fewer MPG than the manual transmission.

Otherwise, I really like my automatic Spider. I have arthritis and it is nice to still be able to drive my car even when the pain is flaring up. It is also great to have in traffic!
