White wire to the dizzy is what??

Post by TVST*R »

My car is having intermittant spark issues (ie, it dies and when I check, there is no spark from the coil) and I noticed the White Wire to the dizzy is sort of burnt and was taped up. Can I splice this burned part out?...maybe she will run then.(Sorry, have had a few cold ones.)
Thanks!

What kind of distributor are you running? stock dual point? Converted to single point? or electronic? I have a 78 and the wires are green. I replaced my wires when I had some issues. I always encourage replacing them. However I am not sure what you have and mine doesn't have a white wire so ??

stock electronic ignition system has a magnetic pickup unit located inside the distributor. that mag pickup feeds signals to the control module mounted behind the coil on the fender. the wires from the distributor to the module are usually encased in a white insulator.

the magnetic pickup should be checked/replaced periodically, especially if the wires become bare, or the insultion cracks/crumbles. poor spark activity or no spark are common symptoms of failed mag pickup leads.

Ok...I think that is my problem since when I remove the cap and lossen the mag pickup and put it back together...she runs.
Where can I get a Mag pickup?
Thanks!!!

You can get one at Advance Auto or AutoZone but it's cheaper to get them from IAP or VIck's.

Autozone.com lists two pick up coils; Duralast for 57.99, Beck Arnley for 53.99.

What brand did you get for $15, Craig? I ended up buying one from Advance for twice as much cuz the car died and it was cheaper than towing it.

I think Craig is refering to the ignition controll module behind the coil, not the magnetic pickup.

Markie Mark took care of me...new Mag P/U (magnet was upside down on the old one???) and Control Mod...it starts soooo fast now!!!...He also found a missing header bolt and a loose one too....so, check your nuts when ever you can.
