I have a '77 with the two tube style and while it doesn't look nearly as nice as the chrome bumpers - I did take a pretty hard hit from the back while in a drive through of all places. I was surprised at the force of the impact done by a huge pick up truck only 2-3 ft behind me. It shoved the car forward a couple of feet while I was reaching for the food with my foot on the brake. The bumper withstood it like a champ - no damage. If I had the chrome bumper or was in my daily driver at the time - would have definitely been costly for that grossly negligent driver.
