Bumper Removal

I was asked if the car had the bumpers removed or modified when I insured mine and have seen notices about reduced coverage and potentially having the policy canceled for the lack of or modification of bumpers on other policies in the past.

The insurance question is something to consider.

Dang it...I as debating on whether to remove them or not...they look so sexy without them...but yeah, I bought this thing to drive, not show, so maybe it's best to keep them on...

Hagerty's for one requires pictures of the car for agreed upon value insurance. So presumably if you send them a picture of your bumperless Spider and they insure it you are OK.

If it had bumpers when you insured it and then took them off it would be very wise to update the insurance pictures.

All insurance companies will deny a claim if they were lied to or otherwise decieved.

I signed with Hagerty a couple weeks ago. NO pics required for their standard agreed value of $10,400. Being it's over 2x what I paid for the car a few months ago I didn't attempt to increase their agreed value and provide pics.

I signed a month ago and had to send one side photo. It was a poor photo and didn't show bumpers and they didn't care.

They actually rejected my 75 cj5 and said it needed to be "more complete". the windshield frame was off - they are supposed to do that on pre-76 - and the paint job is ugly right now. But What old beater jeep isnt?

You really have the read the fine print because some agents are great about telling about the exclusions and gotchas while others are not. Some may put it under excluding coverage when safety equipment is removed or have some other crafty legalease that excludes coverage. Some even put it as configured for racing or practice for racing.

In regards to the turn signals, I placed mine in the square openings under the headlights. Granted, they won't fit in the holes. So I just have them pressed up against the inside of the holes using some metal strapping that's bolted to the shock mounts and screwed into back of the turn signals. Maybe someday I'll upgrade.

I purchased the LED headlamps with turn signals from Allison.

I replaced my broken grill with radiator cover mesh from Lowes? And had lots left over to cover the holes.

The front bumpers were no problem, the back... I had to shift the tank a lot.

But it's done and I'm happy with the results.

For those who had to move the tank to remove the rear bumper, did you have to disconnect the hoses, including filler, or could you wedge it with those attached? Does anyone have a photo in-progress?

I disconnected everything I could; capping each part. Get all the gas out that you can; there's lots in the reserve and it weighs a lot.

2x4 did the trick, I'm pretty sure I had some 1x2 as well.

I did mine without dis-assembling anything. Just removed the nuts and lifted the tank enough to fit a 1 x 4 under it to help lever it up.

Success! But I was scratching my head for a while until I realized one of the bolts on my fuel pump standoffs was blocking me from lifting out the tank. And the kicker is I was so focused on the goal I forgot to take pics! Well, here is the finished product:
