will the newer (79+) 2 piece door cards fit an older (1976) door that came with the one piece door card ??

Yes but the screws are located differently. You can just drill new holes for the door cards. The only real difference is where the driver's door mirror adjuster goes through the door panel on the 79+ cars. You'd have to plug off the hole since the older cars didn't have a remote mirror control. I did this swap on my son's 77 using 79 door cards. They look great. Make sure you're not using door cards with power windows. There's a plug on the power window door cards that does not align with the window crank.
