Haggerty valuation

Post by Yadkin »

Has anyone seen the huge increase in Haggerty's valuation. Here's a screenshot of the 3 year data on a '74 Spider.Image

I saw the trend when I was buying mine a couple months ago...I have a feeling it's directly related to the fact that FIAT is back in North America and the Spider has been re-released. I didn't buy it as an investment, but it was a pretty darn good one IMO.

The market will probably stay below Hagerty, as with most cars it seems, but it's good to see the values trending up towards where they should be. I still believe the Fiat 124/Spider 2000 is the best value sports car available.

The days of good $2500-5000 spiders may be gone since sellers won't be willing to sell so cheaply, which is a good thing for all of us current owners.

Our cars were bound to appreciate someday, and that day seems to have finally arrived. Yes, Fiat made a lot of Spiders at the time (and that's held them back), but they're are just too fun and cool not to finally catch up with other classic cars of that era. I'm tempted to pick up a second project car just to put in storage while I finish my first one.

I don't agree that the large numbers of these vehicle made makes them less valuable today. Look at the Ford Mustang as an example.

That certainly looks clean, but there are a lot of cars on this board that do as well. 23K? Good for him.
I'm with Russ, my insurance renews this fall and I may just have to bump it up.

I have Hagerty as well. They insure for agreed value. If you insure with them at $25k and they also agree on the value based on photos, you will pay the price for that value in your rate.

If totaled, they will pay that price.

That's the way classic car insurance works- it's not just Haggerty.

I went with another carrier because Haggerty wouldn't insure me. About once/ year I visit my father in Florida and he lives in a gated community, where the residents have covered carports, not garages. No garage to park for a few nights/ year, no Haggerty.

I think a few days on the road for an event like you described does not count.
If the car lives in a garage at your home the rest of the time is fine with them.

No, I applied over the phone, and the gal told me that she's denying my application because of that. I insured my car through a USAA affiliate and told them the same story, and they had no problem with it.

I just signed up w/Hagrty the other day. No pictures required and a good condition agreed value of $10,400! I paid $4K for the car a couple months ago...I agreed. No deductible for comp or collision and a small annual adder ($35) to increase UNLIMITED 15 mile towing to 60 miles. After a long conversation w/my buddy who's job at Grundy's is to figure out how to deny your claim he pointed me to Hagerty as "really the only insurance company with agreed value that will let you drive your car". Grundy's WILL NOT cover you unless you're just out for a drive or at a show. Tell them you took it for ice cream and it was hit in the parking lot, DENIED, you shouldn't be driving and STOPPING anywhere but a show or a gas station. Tell them you went out for ice cream and didn't make it, getting into an accident ON THE WAY and you're denied.

Hagerty will cover you everywhere, assuming you're taking it out on errands etc. Their base mileage was 3,500 a year which is plenty for me. Regarding Yadkin's trip to his dad's he's correct. They wouldn't cover that. I asked about a similar scenario as my family has a beach front condo with a private indoor garage for residents, but my car would be surrounded by other residents cars. Essentially they said if you're taking it away from home, parking over night in anything other than a private, fully enclosed space you're NOT covered. I guess my family will have to look into a private beach house with at least one enclosed parking space :) . I can take it to our beach condo of course, but I would not be covered if it got hit in the garage and I was there for a weeks vacation. A day trip to the beach I'm covered there. Take a week at the beach, get hit in the garage and tell them I was there for a day trip, sure...If I want them to check with my employer to see if I took a weeks vacation and wind up in jail for insurance fraud...NO THANKS, official day trips only.
