If you use a saber saw consider putting a zero clearance shoe over the existing one to help prevent breakage. A 20 tpi hollow ground scroll cutting blade can help too.

I found that a 10" disc sander was ideal for this project. There's no slop from a belt, and you can do a slight bevel on the circumference for a snug fit and sharp appearance.

Yes, there are different thicknesses of wood for the individual components. I used mahogany plywood, but that was before I discovered heat-activated veneer glue. If I had to do it again, I would veneer.

Your mahogany dash looks incredible - one of the nicest I've ever seen - and the console pieces really bring it all together.

I've seen furniture-grade veneers in 1/42" thickness, so I wonder if its possible to sand the existing dash pieces, veneer them and then apply the clear varnish? It seems like it would save the step of cutting out the wood dash pieces.

I saw a bird's eye maple dash on another post that really caught my eye. (The problem with this forum is I keep getting all these great ideas for which I have neither the time nor the money.)

BTW, are some of the dashes faux wood? My 77 dash seems very plasticy to me.

My black dash is made from aircraft ply (very sfable) with veneer over the top.

The dash for the 2000 are original dash components veneered by a professional (thanks SoFlaFiat!)

I believe all of the dashes are faux wood.

You can definitely veneer your current dash - just be a little careful on the glue you use. Wood glue will adhere poorly to the Formica covering.

Yellow Wood glue works fine, you just have to uniformly sand the surface first.

several people on the site have veneered over the existing pieces. i would have as well, but wanted to redesign the dash. apologies to the purists.

Yellow yes on a well roughed original dash panel but not utility white wood glue.

Be mindfull that some wood glues will react with the tannic acid in woods/veneers that have a high content of it resulting in black/grey streaking. Test the adhsive you decide upon on some scrap first would be advisable.
