driveshaft center support assy and bearing.

Post by kevireno »

on my 79 fiat 124, the driveshaft center link support assy is shot. The rubber is cracked, and falling apart. I am going to have to order a new/replacement one> Do I have to replace the bearing also? Is there some way to check the bearing?

that is a sealed bearing and the seal is probably shot as well. To inspect it requires pulling the drive shaft so you can spin it and see how it feels and inspect the seals.

It would be foolish to not replace the bearing as well, likely it's 20-30 year old just like the support.

Pro-Tip.

When you take the driveshaft apart, MARK IT to note which way its put together so you can put in put back the same way. You need to mark it in three places - Both U-Joints and the center spline needs to be marked. Ask me how I learned this.

Its best to go ahead and get a driveshaft rebuild kit. - all the vendors sell them for a reasonable price. The U-Joints come new with grease fittings, and they only like to go on a certain way, so be careful that they don't interfere with the rotation of the shaft when you install them.

Hi,
Do you mind posting a picture of the parts you're replacing? I believe I too am in need of replacing mine, but don't have a service catalogue handy to look me up.

Thanks and good luck.

thank you all for the tech info. I have the bearing and the bearing carrier is on BO with vender. Yes, I did mark all shafts for assy.
I got an early Birthday gift. 12 ton HFT shop press. So, I am now working on the U-joints R&R. Any tricks/tips for U-joints.

Proper alignment is the key to successful U-joint replacement. No amount of force will substitute. After removal, check for rust in the "bores", and treat with a brake hone if necessary. The job can be ten minutes or all day if you can't get things lined up.

Been away from the project for awhile. In the meantime it got pretty cold so I decided to tackle the driveshaft inside where it's warm. I pulled off the old u-joints and then the support assy w/ bearing, but now putting on the new Support I can't seem to get the castle nut on far enough without causing the Support to bind. If I crank the nut down all the way, the bearing won't turn at all. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? The original support assy had a separate bearing that was held in with a circlip but the new one has ridges that hold the bearing in. I found a diagram showing the 2 cup washers and I think I have them in correctly.

See how the castle nut is not all the way in:

Thanks, Rich.
