4th gear bearing race, there was no spring washer preloading the bearing, the last person in this transmission left it out




this is a good used bearing race, of course, the whole bearing had to be replaced



this is a 5th reverse layshaft extension, a piece of the 5th gear syncro engagement area was broken off and was run through this. the next picture will show missing teeth on the 5th gear

i also replaced both shift hubs and all 4 brass syncros and the 1-4 shift forks.

Wasn't there a thread, a transmission "specialist" admitted to not replacing all parts back into his rebuilds; stating they weren't necessary! So much for his theory...

Obviously s/he was creating very special transmissions...

think about this, a friend of mine worked for gm, back in the 1990's, he was in upper management in the r&d department for cost savings. we had a lengthy discussion about extra parts, for example the extra washer, the extra bolt etc. he informed me that they have researched every part and if they could leave out a single washer during the production run of the vehicle they could save over a million dollars. so there are no extra parts!
