i have a rattle noise coming from the shifter on my 1976 fiat 124, it goes away if i put any pressure on shifter, seems to be worse in lower gears, previous owner said he replaced transmission, does anyone know where to look for problem first? have looked at checking trans. gear lube but what appears to be fill plug looks to be awfully hard to get to for checking or filling, is there an easier access that i am not seeing?
thanks

more than likely the nut that holds the shifter has loosened. From under the car remove the triangular cover with 3 bolts at the bottom of the shifter. The shifter should have a locknut on it. If the nut has loosened, the shifter cup may be worn too. If the hole in the lower shift cup is larger than the shaft, it will keep loosening and will need to be replaced.
I agree with Mark. With the way the shifter is designed, the nut can't quite fall off (it is trapped by the cup it all fits into) but it can get with a few threads and make the shifter loose and prone to rattling.
Might also want to check to see of the cup and ball mechanism in the shifter extension is greased.
