Converting a FI motor to motorcycle carburetors

Post by Batmanbat4 »

Hello,

I have been considering converting my 1981 FI 2.0 to run-on motorcycle carburetors for the potential performance increase. I've looked at Yamaha R1 carbs as they seem to be a common swap for other cars, and plenty of resources are available. I would have to create a new intake manifold to fit the carbs and install a fuel pressure regulator to adapt to the original fuel pump. If I removed the fuel injection system from the car, would the fuel pump stop working? I believe that the pump is connected to the ECU so I am unsure if it will still activate. If anyone has the answer or is able to point out anything I have not thought of with this swap that would be great. I have moved away from fuel-injected individual throttle bodies due to the added cost of an aftermarket ECU and more difficult setup but if the ITBs are significantly better than the carbs I would be willing to consider it.

Thanks

If you remove the IF system the ECU will not turn on the fuel pump, however you can add a relay to do this and remove the ECU. You should also add something to turn off the fuel pump when the engine is not running or you are involved in an accident.
