I have a welded rear diff that the PO had labeled as a 4.44 that came with my race car when I bought it. I always thought the early Spiders had 4:30 rears in them and have never heard of a 4.44 so I thought he had it labeled wrong. But when I went to install it, I noticed 9/40 and 1971 are stamped on the ring gear so that would be a 4.44 ratio. Were the early Spiders with 1438 and 1608 motors a lower rear end ratio? It would make sense to do that with the smaller motors that like to rev. This could also be from another Fiat model from 1971? This is actually good news for me since this is a race car.

Re: 4.44 Rear Diff?
Thanks, BEEK. I was wondering if it was from a 131 or something like that. I would imagine that this is probably about the best diff you can have for a race car, other than finding the Holy Grail of rear ends...an Abarth IRS.

Re: 4.44 Rear Diff?
A slight clarificaton, the 4.44 ration was only fitted to the early 1200 cc station wagons. The sedan had the 4.3. The 1438 cc station wagon had 4.3 while the sedan had the 4.1.
I too fitted my race car with the 4.44 ratio which I purchased from the famous Al Costino, but that is a different story....
