Exhaust fitment

Post by scampbel98 »

The car originally came with a 4-1 setup and was reportedly a 49-state car - a 1980 Fiat 124.

During engine rebuild it was discovered that the motor was actually a 1.8L block mated with a 2L FI head and carbed.
This setup is nice cause the emissions port is already blocked. I rebuilt the motor about 2 years ago with the 8mm pistons bored out +1mm. I've been running headers (Vicks?) for a while but they're just too hot and I can't get the fitment quite right at the collector. Plenty of power - good sound.

I've got an exhaust manifold marked 4166429 and matching downpipe (4-bolt variety) I'm wanting to put in. As near as I can tell, this setup and the parts are appropriate, will work and will fit - and I shouldn't need a 10mm spacer I've read about in the forums. Can anyone confirm?

i would assume the collector fitment issue is the face that the headers you have are for a 2.0 not a 1.8 the block height difference is an issue.

If you have an 1800 block then a stock 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and downpipe will fit, it's the height of the block that was causing issues, not which head was used. I run this setup on my 71 coupe and 73 spider and they both have 2L motors. If you use the later downpipe version of the 4 bolt downpipe with a 2L, there is plenty of clearance for the downpipe. I'm guessing the spacer requirement started with someone using an early downpipe on a 2L block.

Carl, how can I identify the later model downpipe?

My 2LFI manifold has a 6 bolt flange.

Visually I'm not sure you can tell the difference. For the coupe I just bought the later downpipe (from Csaba I think) and it fit on real nice whereas the one I got from a friend was just too short. The later 4 bolt downpipe is just a little bit longer in the vertical dimension.

Thanks. That's interesting. It must be very subtle. The only clear indicator is that the offset is maybe a bit off and the mounting point (that attaches to the tranny hanger) is about 3/4" off. I must have the wrong one what ever it is...

But I have a new problem now... this AM the blue/black wiring on the C22 connector behind dash is burning up.. Smoke.
Great... what now.... Ignition is affected too apparently.
