4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
I have a 1980 Carburated Fiat Spider, I want to use an early 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, but it doesn't have the water outlet on it. I am not using the water heated Carb any longer, is it possible to block off the water outlet and use the early manifold?
Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
Maybe he's talking about the egr pipe.So Cal Mark wrote:there isn't any water outlet on the exhaust manifold
Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
I thought I noticed an extra ear and bolt hole on the back of the Stock Manifold, I still have the heat sheild on the stock manifold as well as the rest of the stock stuff. I guess I was wrong.
Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
Could be the water pump/heater pipe running under the exhaust manifold. That pipe has an "ear" nipple for the water choke.

I agree with Fiat88, he is probably talking about the EGR port at the front of the carburated 2 liter manifold and head. This would be the "extra ear and bolt" he is describing.

Yep, I think it is the EGR pipe at the front of the motor, at any rate the early manifold doesn't have that mount.
I have noticed headers that just have part of the header flange cover that hole.
So my question is, could I make an Aluminum adapter plate that would match a 2L exhaust gasket, less the hole for the pipe, and just through bolt the manifold through the adapter, effectivly blocking the EGR passage.
Or am I just spinning my wheels, so to speak

Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
since you won't be using the EGR, just block that hole off. If you're changing the intake manifold to an earlier version it won't be an issue at all
Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
One last question, what down pipes should I use to fit the 1980 chassis, I will be eliminating the Cat.

Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
Depends on the manifold. Early manifolds have 4 studs for the down pipe the later,my 80 fi anyway, have 6 studs. There is a flange at the end of the downpipe where the cat is connected. You will have to source or make a short pipe to replace the cat to the rest of the exhaust.

Re: 4-2-1 Exhaust Manifold
Try to find a 2 liter FI downpipe and manifold. they are bigger than the early ones and have no extra fittins to block on the manifold, other than the O2 sensor. PB : )
