Another 79 "intakectomy" convertion to 32/36 DFEV

Post by co200balt »

Well, the wrenches came out for a great father-son time with the mighty silver spider. We removed all the SMOG stuff,Carb, and Intake Manifold! Boy do I love universal joints and extensions! I took a view pictures and will post latter. Now to start blocking off all the open holes..... I must say that this board and "Tech Support SOCAL Mark" have been a great source of assitance and inspiration!

So here is a little more about our project. This is to be my son, Steve's first car and a chance to learn a bit about working on cars. We found his little Italian beauty had been stored in a Hanger at the San Juan Island airport (WA) for 14 years! She only has a little over 49k miles. We got her cleaned up, the electrical issues worked out, new fuel pick up and guage sender, and put new tires on her. About that time Steve got his license and the Carb decides it no longer wants to play. The shafts totally locked up. So that takes up to the current project... Replace the stock Carb with a 32/36 DFEV and swap out the stock manifold with an 1800 manifold. The car is no longer subject to emissions testing!

Since I just went thru this not long ago, and had a brain fart over the same spot, I can say with absolute certainty that the spot marked is nothing. It's only a cavity in the casting so don't worry about it. However, just to the left of said cavity is a port that runs thru the head and over to the exhaust manifold. You have to block that off or it will be very noisy!

Also I'm sorry to tell you this but you have only a 4-1 exhaust manifold :(

Thought the 4-2-1 has studs, the pipe I took off a 79 parts car had some kind of flange clamp to attatch the single pipe to the manifold. That was a couple of years ago and I'll be the first to admit I can't remember the details. (ask me my kindergarden teachers name 45 years ago --no problem)

Thanks for the info regarding the casting cavity! On the Exhaust, you could be right but there is two pipes connected to the manifold and those merge into one under the car? But you guys know more than I :) this picture does not show it very well

Plan to put a freeze plug into the EGR port hole on the head. is that what most of you have done?

DUH!!!

Guess I should look closer. Didn't see the second pipe hiding in the back, but also don't see the clamp ring(?) the the 4-1 (mine) has. I'll just chalk it up to jealousy.

i used a metric thread oil pan plug

and, plan on fabricating a new bracket for your dipstick tube, or start looking for a dipstick tube from a fuel injected engine.

Mike, do you recall what size drain plug fits in there? I assume there are threads in there somewhere?

I used an M16-1.5 oil pan plug on mine.
I think I got it at AutoZone.

remembering what i had for dinner yesterday is becoming a chore for me. remembering the size of a single metric plug i purchased three years ago is NOT available in this overcrowded storage device.

if you still have the reed valve, take that with you to Auto Zone, Advance Auto, etc. i find that when you are modifying, most of those counter jockies will willingly show you their available stock and let you paw through it to find just the right fitting for your needs. i did this with my intake manifold when i was removing the sensors.

then, while you are on vacation, just start dreaming of the day you take the Spider to all those exhotic vacation spots, like Fiat Freak Out!! or Dixie Fest...

So now that SoCalMark has announced his new Exhaust System, I can add that one of his new systems will be going on our 79 as well. This has been planned all along but wanted to let Mark make the announcement. So our current work will be the convertion to the 1800 intake manifold, new 32/36 DFEV, and Mark's new exhaust system for stock replacement! I think that should wake her up just a bit!

So I have another question. What have all you experts done for throttle linkage? In other words how have you connected the throttle arm to the new carb?

I took the arm off the old carb and used that. I think I had to cut some of it off. I'll try and get a picture tomorrow. I think the throttle linkage is the same between 79 and 80 so what I did should work for yours as well. The only glitch would be any differences at the carb end. I have a 32 ADF.
