Going to start reassembling my engine this week. I was able to get another block with good crank, rods and pistons. New bearings, gaskets and rings came in today.

You mentioned gas blowing by the needle valve. check your fuel pump pressure; if too high could cause your gas problem.. should be between 2-4 psi.
also, for kicks: check/adjust your carb float.. If you don't know age of carb; might as well rebuild with all the other work you are doing.
