Color match - touch up paint

Post by aaronsoots »

Sorry if this is the wrong area. I have been looking for some touch up paint that will go well with my Cherry Red '78 but not finding anything in the states that really has a color that matches or has a color swatch posted. I know it won't be perfect as the sun has been beating the heck out of this paint for years. It is original paint and has some spiderweb cracking and some general chips that i'd like to get a "close" match on and then do a clear coat over it.

I am basically just wanting to prevent rust and I have an area on the door panel where it looks like some bondo was used and is just a bit faded. Any luck here in the states with either a modern color that's close or a good supplier in the states for original color?

Just a side note, this is a little wacky, but on my red 80 FI, I found that Gloss Apple Red Rustoleum is an almost exact match for small touch up. 8 bucks a quart. LOL. No large areas or it shows the difference, but it is surprisingly close for nicks.

Great thanks guys. Honestly I probably will not ever have this thing to "show quality" but do want to keep it in the best shape as I can. The rustoleum may be the best option as I can keep it around and I am sure they will keep it around for future use. I will try that first on a small area and if it doesn't work out I am still under $10 and we can use it for something else.

Napa and carquest in my area both have paint matching systems. They can scan the paint and get an exact match. And then mix it and put it in a spray can. I've done this several times for about 20 bucks A pop for acrylic enamel.
