Cat replacement with Test Pipe?

Post by Frog2Spider »

Hi all,

This appears to be an old subject here, as most postings I've found date back to 2007/2008.

All the exhaust shops I've spoke with, start doing the same dance, when asked to build me one. They first kinda look like a slug that's just been covered with salt! Then they start looking around to see if anyone heard me. It's like the EPA has all the shops 'bugged' with video and audio! :D One guy I called, even hung up on me!

And the stores on line, that I've tried, don't seem to carry them any longer.

I've got a '81 Spider, with 4 bolt flanges. Anyone know where I can get a test pipe?

Thanks ...

I have no idea where you can get one. I made my own. You are not going to get a shop to make you one as they would be braking the law and you are not willing to pay them enough for that. Just cut the flanges off of yours and weld them onto a exhaust pipe.

Thanks guys!

I wanted to keep the cat in case it was ever needed, although it certainly would be the way to go encomicly. The other thought I had, if none were available 'pre-made', was to buy a old one, and use the flanges off it to build one.

However, it seems I didn't look deep enough. $130 is a bit 'rich', but is the way I'll go ....

Thank you both again for the in-put. Much appreciated!

Trust me in the end this will be much cheaper unless you can weld yourself or have a buddy do it for you at the friend rate. Welding isn't cheap now a days at least in my neck of the woods, plus material and the added hassle of sourcing the flanges if you don't want to hack off yours, this really isn't that bad when all you have to do is pick up a phone and have it show up to your door in a few days. Good luck and your going to love that little extra grunt she'll have with no cat. I loved the way my old '84 sounded after adding a cat bypass and the Ansa rear section.

I've got one I'd be willing to sell. 4 bolt flange, and only used few a couple years.

Let me know if you're interested.
