Weber 38 DGES Carb question...
It is getting closer to me getting my motor done and so I am starting to look at the carb option. I dont want to go duals so I bought a 1800 intake on eBay for $50 I think it was and then started looking at carbs.
I know the heads and cams make a difference on how to select a carb for my application, I cant give exact specifications for my head build but the motor is pretty beefy. 85mm 8mm dome pistons, the head has gotten a lot of work and I should have it back before long.
I was given suggestions to use a 32/36 or a 34. Another performance builder told me not to waste my time with the 32/36.
I came across a 38 DGES.
Has anyone used one before?
Is there a linkage or choke location issue?
I can fabricate new brackets and mounting if required.
Good idea to use a spacer?
Will this solve any clearance issues?

we've installed a few. The 2L owners like them, the one 1800 owner didn't. Since they're synchronous rather than progressive, there is a bit of a learning curve on how to get off the line quickly but it's not a big deal. You will need to fabricate linkage and a spacer is always a good idea. They sure have a great top end

You and I have essentially the same motor. I have 80/40 cams; you didn't specify yours.
I gave up trying to make the 38DGS work on my engine. As Mark states, lots of top end, but I could not eliminate the bog or hesitation in the transition from idles to mains. This made it unsuitable for my kind of driving, and I'm having good luck with the 36DCD. http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... &sk=t&sd=a
The 32/36 has gotten rave reviews from a number of converts with a wide variety of motor sizes and temperments. Easy linkage install, too. You could always sell it to another Spider builder if it didn't meet your power requirements.

Does your 36 DCD have a mechanical progressive or is it vacuum? Also do you get any bogging with the 26mm choke on the primary? Have you tried smaller? Have you tried a 27mm? Are you running stock compression?
I have a DCD and have been thinking of making a "bang for the Buck" motor. I'm glad some one has done it.

25 mm primary, 27mm secondary on progressive linkage. I'm running lots of compression, with +1mm domed pistons and an 1800 head that's probably been resurfaced. 220 psi, FWIW. No bogging. Let me know when you get closer, and we can talk about jetting, etc.

I have the 38/38 dges i love it works great now that i have "fiddled" with it i bought the kit from vicks auto i had some issues with bogging and rough acceleration but sorted through them with a little fabrication now it works great nice balance between power and mpg

A member here is doing it. Was hoping to have it running this summer but summer almost half over and still dont have it. I have had the lower end built for 2 years now, been waiting on the head for almost 19 months. I hope it was worth the wait when I do get it.

I have a built up 1800 with pbs 1 cams, high comp pistons, lots of head flow work done, variable cam pullys. I run the 36DCD carb with a 27 primary and 28 secondary (biggest chokes i could find) no bogging, and almost pulls as hard as when i ran twin 40 IDF's without all the tuning nonsense those carbs constantly required. I set up the jets with a A/F meter hooked up to the exhaust so i could see the ratios under load on the road. 12 to 13 to 1 through most of the range worked best

Adding my 2c... I've got the 38ADL running on my 1800. Progressive as opposed to the synchronous 38DGES - and it's absolutely fantastic. When the second barrel opens the sound is just great...
