Theoretical build for 180-200hp
Theoretical build for 180-200hp
Starting with a good running 81 2000, What is the realistic work needed to get close to, if not 200HP? The way I see it it would go something like this:
1) Pull the FI and put on some 40mm webers
2) Nice header & exhaust
3) cams with a power curve strong up to 7500-8k
4 mild port job on the heads
5) pistons yielding 10 or 10.5:1 compression
Is there anyone out there that will sell a built, dyno'd engine making 200hp? If so , how much?
I thought about stuffing a small V6 in it but I might be happier spending the money on whats in it.

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
If you read Guy Croft's book it is apparent that when you approach the 200HP mark the engine is not really streetable.
If you want it streetable, you need to go with turbo or supercharging. You also need to think what you are going to use for a transmission or rear end, as the stock units will not take that kind of torque.

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
you'd need at least 44mm carb for that rpm and cams that make power up in that range won't be very streetable. It would take more than a mild port job on the head and you'd need good valve springs and connecting rods

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
Sorry mate.....Honda S2000 has that kind of power and you would likely get the whole car for the price of a complete Fiat engine rebuild in that HP range. Not to mention the trans upgrade required. Qualifier though... if you have to send out most of the work...

180 at the wheels. And it's not just cams and a port job.

150 Hp-$2000...
headers....$350.
2-2 1/4 exhaust...$250.00
re-bore block for larger diameter pistons...$240.00
larger pistons about $400.00
Balanced - about $250.00
Head work $700.00
Want larger valves...about $160.00+
after market cams $200.00
Adjustable cam gears....$200.00
Carbs 44's...$700-1000.00
Intake $300.00
Degreeing in engine...$100.00 perhaps
Gasket set....$70.00
Head gasket $60.00?
Bearings...$100.00+
So far $3780.00 and perhaps more with a good header and carb's at $750.00 Some of those costs were what I paid for my engine but I have a stock FI system.
I trust you do the tear down and re-build....

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
I am going this way, hope to get some zip for minimal money:
lightened flywheel
midrange cams
~9.5/1 pistons
lighter pulleys
keep 4-2-1 and stock exhaust
gear reduction starter (did this anyway)
distributorless ignition (did this anyway)
maybe some minor head work, but probably just a valve freshening.
My guess is about 130 hp "equivalent" and a lot more zip around town, which is all I am looking for, in the 2000-5000 rpm range.

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
The mid-90s 3.4 firebird V6 & 5 speed looks pretty good again. I can do a drivetrain swap with 150hp/200lb torque for under $2000.

Itd be faster. But do some reading about your engine. It has a very special pedigree worth preserving.

Keep your flat piston and add a turbo using megasquirt

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
I only know a couple of Megasquirt folks, and every time I see them at cruises, they have a little less hair, and spend half the show fiddling with the thing on a compooter. I have nothing against MS, but is this common and are they that fiddly?

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
Running MS for three years now. I've come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a perfect tune that accomodates for the proper advance in all situations. Have not touched the tune in over 2.5 years. I suspect some of the folks on the cruises have the tool and know how to use it. Therefore, they do use it and even overuse it.
I've been following this thred with interests as this topic seems to be FIAT Spider top 10 discussion point. IMHO, if you get 150 HP or more out of a 30+ year old spider and it can be driven on the street easily...you have a major win. Yet, we want to push that number up. Is it possible, yes! However, at that point the costs create a tipping point for the car making too many other little roadsters a more approprriate choice for the small car high HP combination at a lower cost.
The Spider is what it is and when you change it to much you end up with something competely different.

Re: Theoretical build for 180-200hp
Toyota guys are all about some megasquirt. If you rebuild your engine with good pistons, MS, and a good intercooled turbo, 150whp should be safe and easy. As others have pointed out, going above that I'd start looking long and hard at my transmission and diff.
