So I was doing some reading today on this fine Fiat forum. One of the gurus recommended a MSD blaster III ignition coil. I have tried two Accel coils and they both failed pretty Damned fast.... then I went back to the stock coil. Well I picked one up after work and installed it and it made a huge difference in acceleration! I think I even let out a rebel yell! Wahoooooo!
(my motor is a 2 liter highly modified with pop up pistons and 1800 head mild cams and dual IDFs)

Re: MSD Blaster III
more spark is better, the issue you'll still have is that spark begins to diminish at 5000rpm due to lack of dwell time

Re: MSD Blaster III
I am running an Accell ignition module. I would love to go distributor-less someday...

Re: MSD Blaster III
my understanding is the 1979+ electronic ignition vs the earlier style requires a different coil. Can someone expand on this?

That's a points vs electronic ignition difference. There see conversion kits available they are cheap and easy installation.

Re: MSD Blaster III
I run a Bosch HEC coil on mine, through a Crane Hi-6 CD box, huge spark and no issues in 6 years. I used to do a party trick of pulling out the coil from the distributor while the engine was running, the spark would jump well over an inch and the engine continued idling. I got bitten a couple of times and decided it's not worth the pain and potential death, so I don't do it anymore. The HEC has a lower primary resistance which can load the ignition module too much and kill it. The Bosch MEC coil primary resistance is a bit higher and doesn't load the module so much.

Re: MSD Blaster III
Easiest solution is a drop in distributorless system. More complicated/time consuming solution would be an aftermarket ECU that can control your ignition. I never really had performance problems with the stock dizzy.. I just got sick of changing coils/pickups/modules.

I've only had 1 pick up go bad on me to date, It's all the heat from the exhaust manifold that kills the coils andClarkTheShark wrote:Easiest solution is a drop in distributorless system.
