Upgrading carb on 79 to Weber 32/36 DFEV
Upgrading carb on 79 to Weber 32/36 DFEV
OK – I know there are many postings on this topic, and I have read them all – most probably twice, but I am having trouble figuring out how to adapt the throttle from my old carb to the new 32/36. The new carb has this black squared off piece that moves the throttle, and has 2 push rods connected to it driving some element of the carb. The new carb came with a simple adapter – a flat piece of bronze with a slotted hole for the bolt and a ball on the end. Problem is – the adapter does not fit with the stock black piece on, and if I remove the stock black piece, then I lose the connection to the 2 push rods. I have pics but don’t have permission to upload – but can post once someone tells me how – I think Mark needs to give me permission. Let me know – want to get this bad boy back on the road and spring has sprung!! Thank you all in advance for any help!

I was about to ask "can we see a picture?"
Hopefully beating RRoller123 to it...

sweet - it worked! so looking at the top adapter at the bottom - it would go onto the carb mounting stud in exactly the same orientation it is in the photo - but it hits the black piece (on the inside of the U shape that you can't see) so I either file a notch in the black piece, or do something else. regardless - I have no threads left to attach both pieces!!?? you see the black push-rod to the left of the black piece - so if I remove that piece, the pushrod had nothing to attach too!!??

The cut off is the sizing...
... but I still can't see it... probably more likely something to do with the vagueties of United provided internet access.
Hopefully someone else can help - but otherwise I'll take a look when I'm back on terrafirma

All
as I continued to start at my new carb last night after posting this thread, I think the best solution is to use the ball on the threaded stud and drill a hole in the black bracket. this eliminates the short thread problem completely and leave the carb basically intact out of the box. That is what I am thinking - but will hold off until this weekend to see if there are any other helpful posts. thanks to all who chimed in - I love this forum. I also know from other posts that once i get the stock manifold off i have some clean up to do on my crankcase vent system - so look forward to that job this weekend as well before the new carb and 1800 manifold are put in place and my spider is re-born!!!

FYI - here is the car from last spring - just after replacing shocks and tires - and a few other engine enhancements to address 7 years of garage rot. runs well and the new carb should significantly improve that!!

oops - sizing problem - let me see if this works

Hey - so it looks like the part arm slips over the throttle shaft in the middle of that black clip. I've not seen it before - but it kind of looks like an alternative to the lock washer and nut that's on the older carbs.
Do you have one of these on the spindle?

Here you go. Used the Photobucket edit feature to resize picture from 1024 - 680 to 700 - 411. The second factor sets automatically in proportion to the first.

Toplessexpat - thanks - yes I have that washer - I ended up removing the thick washer behind the stock black bracket and put the linkage adapter there. the adapter now serves as the washer and I have enough thread to not be concerned - with the lock washer in place to keep the nut from spinning.
Exit98 - thanks - I will try that. I did a few things to try to reduce the size but had no luck - don't have photoshop just MSOffice crap - but I will give it a shot. manifold is off, crank case vent system cleaned, exhaust port capped on exhaust side, bracket for dip stick manufactured, painted and ready to go in - working stack height on the carp (got one of miller mules spacer plus a couple of other polymer spacers to get the carb up a little higher - my version of a "hi-rise" manifold - but need to check clearance with the hood. will get the manifold on this weekend, then check height and linkage movement, then fire the car back up and dial her in!
thanks all!
