look what I found

http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11418

even using that concept I have decided, upon closer inspection, that trying to flush mount (or even using the spacers) a 6x9 speaker in that location is not feasible with my limited brain power and lack of willingness to cut the metal to try and stuff it in there .... but being stubborn and already have bought and made the decision for those speakers in that location I will now be building a custom box using the map pocket back panel as a template.... that piece goes higher and longer than the box needs to be so trimming that panel is first on the list... float a ring ...stretch some fleece and let the fiberglassing commence ...

as most of my jobs go on the fiat .. the "while I am here" jobs will get added I am sure ... 1st one will be the carpet that will get pulled up while wiring .... when I first purchased the car the old carpet was trashed ...ripped it all out and cut up a 5 buck remnant from home depot... that will all come up and some knock off ez cool product will go down and a new 10 remnant will be chopped up and put in

I will continue this thread with lots of pics of my progression... I know how you guys love pics

I did something along the lines of that thread. I built boxes out of 1/8 plywood, covered them in vinyl and replaced the map pockets with them. This is rev 1 - I'm sure there is going to be a rev 2, as they came out OK, but need improvement. The car is stripped and being reassembled, but they seem to sound pretty good in the stripped car.

Hi Matt,

Looks good. A couple of questions.

> Just curious on why you cut off the overhang on the plastic map pocket backing?

> More importantly - how are you planning to attach the map pocket/speaker to the car? On mine the box covered the screw holes so I needed to find a way to attach the box after I mounted the plastic. I ended up with velcro (hence rev 2 coming as soon as I get a better idea). I'm hoping I can steal an idea from you.

Did you run a screw into the back of your legs where they attach to the plastic?

trimming the overhanging plastic was to ease the material stretching so that I could have a smoother surface to glass to .... without trimming I would end up with folds and/or seams/wrinkles that would have to be dealt with when it come time for sanding ..... as well as the reinforcing of the box is all done from the inside of the box to try and leave a nice smooth surface on the outside ..(material is fleece and a little stretchy ..it then gets painted with fiberglass resin).. trying to reach all those nook and crannies seems like it will add frustration and considerable time to the project ..and any plastic that gets cut that portion of the car that is now exposed will get padding and fresh carpet .... in my mind it will all look quite good .. and originally behind that panel was quite thick with padding ... that gives me room to play when new padding is add to somewhat sink the box into that area a little ... know what I mean.. as far as attaching ..because it is a 6x9 ... once the hole is cut for the speaker to drop in relative to the size of the box I should have enough room to just run some self tappers right thru the back of the box into the sheet metal ..... I have considered pre drilling the mounting holes and glassing some bolts right into the box and predrilling the cars sheet metal .... I then would slide the box into place and tighten down with nuts from the wheel well side of the equation ... kinda like this idea because I could use some type of headless screw to mount speakers to the box and a thief thinking to steal the speakers would pop off the speaker grill cover and not have an option to just unscrew the speaker to take it

no screws ... hot glue gun ... I cut the dowels a bit long and then with a piece of sandpaper flat on the bench... sand a little away at a time till it gets where I want it ... little hot glue and hold in place .... then glob some more around the base .... it is quite solid ... and after stretching it gets quite sturdy quick ....

I stretched one box already last night but no pics ..... was gonna take pics of second box step by step ... will post up when done .... even trimmed down plastic I still had some wrinkles in the material but made it so those wrinkles are at the back top of the box as you look at it from the seat ...never gonna see the imperfections in that location

it also should be stated that I have no idea what I am doing ... got an idea ... watched some youtube ... and going for it

ok more stuff ..lay out material ...center contraption... and trim for more manageable piece of material ... adhesive spray and pull it tight ... going around bit by bit an checking for wrinkles .... pull wrinkles tight.... and fiberglass resin the cloth... not pushing too hard or you can stretch the material when wet with resin .... added a piece to the back to cover the hole and resin all that too ...

you would of been better off using round speakers vs oval for a couple reasons 1 5 1/4" or 6 1/2" are more common
so finding a good set for a good price. 2 Sound waves move in a Circler motion, just like dropping something in a
smooth pond the waves are round. Oval speakers compress the sound waves but I'm not trying to rain on anyones
parade looks like you did a good job.

oh Daniel .... MY PARADE GOES RAIN OR SHINE ..... shoulda .. coulda ... woulda .... as I said before .. buying my stereo from my ears backwards ... and those 6x9 speakers won that round over the others you mentioned.. hands down .. and stubborn streak in me will fight to the end .... and as far as good job ... thank you ... its my first try at something like this ... kinda fun and a needed distraction from the welding hell that is my current 76 scout project

what a cool job .... I design speaker boxes  ... can you design a 6x9 that will fit in that 5 inch hole  ... that would make my project go much smoother ...

tip of the day .... the boxes get mat and resin on the inside to strengthen them.... I quickly learned after having a batch of resin (about 6 oz) harden on me that at 40 bucks a gallon there has to be a better way... I was spending too much time chasing the mat around with a resin filled brush trying to keep it flat and in place where I want it ... so out came the adhesive I had used earlier ... spray the inside of the box ... stick down the cloth in overlapping strips (quick shot of adhesive when needed) and now the mat stays in place ... it is now like painting a flat surface ... just cut my time and frustration by a lot

ok more stuff .... boxes are done .... nothing special ... did not spend a lot of time sanding ... shot them with undercoating to give a little texture and help seal them up (I guess) ... then shot them flat black .... don't really want them to stand out .... but they are solid ... 3 layers of mat and resin on the inside ...

Image

old carpet is out ... I really did a piss poor job the first time ... pretty much used the wiring as an excuse to rip it out and try and do better

Image

this is the new carpet ... its black

Image

3 yards of thermozite 48 inches wide ... and 3 yards of ozite carpet 80 inches wide delivered to the door for about 120 bucks.... directions say foil side down ... and the carpet has a very cool feel to it ... and both contain quite a bit of recycled material

Image

passenger and drivers side map pocket area all stripped out

Image

Image

holes will get covered with metal jb welded and pop riveted in place while drying then primed and coated with something I have on the shelf on both sides ....
