IDF 40 aircleaner options

Post by TulsaSpider »

Hi all! I need your help shopping. I installed IDF 40's last year that came off a 68 Coupe. The lunchbox style air filers are rusted and tired. Please post pics of different options, pro's and cons etc. The engine is a 2L block 1800 head HC pistons medium cam. Thanks

You should have a ready market for such an item. The OE "turtleback" dual-snorkel unit is very rare.

You probably already know that there's not a lot of height to work with.

as for stacks, the stacks must have a turned over lip at the top , trumpet style and there has to be enough clearance between the top of the trumpet to the air cleaner cover, that is the math and theory and such , i am still working on. the only issues are the hood clearance and filter area.

Sounds nice, but probably not to everyone's taste. You need to run a separate breather filter, and we can debate filtering efficiency all day. I only do 3'000 km a year in clean conditions and plan a rebuild sometime in the next years. When I do, I'll probably move to a custom setup like the one I linked, with a nice ribbed finish and crackle paint.

This is the custom cold air box on the coupe. Air is drawn from in front of the radiator - outside the engine bay - through a radiused 3" bell, and drawn through an enclosed K&N filter, straight to the middle of the carbs, 3" all the way. Under the top are radiused horns for the 44 IDFs. No bends, totally cold air, and really quiets down the carbs and makes them sound great from inside the cabin (less of a growl - more of a whoosh)
