Brake light / tail light

Post by TulsaSpider »

My right rear bank of lights works fine. The left is an issue. When the brake pedal is depressed all three lights light up instead of just one. When the signal is actuated it stops working when the brake pedal is depressed. I don't know much on is auto electrics. I do have a friend who has offered to help. Any ideas?

Hey Clark, I just got thru checking the wiring diagram for your '78. Man it's different than my '82! However, my car had problems with the lights in the rear and part of it was the hazard switch. Everything goes through it and if it's bad things can get weird. Also, does that connector that's getting hot go to a flasher? Your car has two of them. Your problem may lie there.
Let us know what color wires are at that hot connector and maybe we can figure this out.
Pope is really good at long distance wiring diagnosis, hopefully he'll jump in and get wet too.

you probably have a bad ground on the left light. When the brake light gets power without a ground, it travels through the other lights seeking a ground path.

I would also say it's a ground. I had similar problems with mine and found the ground to be loose.

Ok I hope it's that easy on the tail lights! The large whit connector, prolly 2" by 2" or so. I was thinking about that and the PO had hard wired the fan where it's on when the key is on. It might be that. I'll take a pic this afternoon.
Thanks guys!
