If you use Gus Z's AFM-to-cone filter bracket ...

Post by dantye »

Here is a tip If you use this bracket to adapt a cone-type air filter: You can modify the top by cutting it off at the angle shown, which allows using mounting holes in the AFM that tilt it and the cone filter downward, putting the filter closer to cooler air. If you switch mounting holes and tilt it WITHOUT doing this mod, the AFM electrical connector binds on the bracket and will likely be damaged. (My application is '81 Spider 2000 FI, so this may not apply to all models.)

Good tip!! I have had Gus' filter setup on my car for 4 years. It is a excellent product ,and a lot cheaper than some of the others out there.I didnt realize he was still producing them.

It works much better shielded from hot air and with some inlets for cold air. That improves high end torque on hills, since the standard system actually increases intake air VACUUM at higher speeds due to the intake being at a right angle to air flow - FIAT logic? :)

If you cannot find him, it should not be rocket science to fabricate. I could provide dimensions if needed.

Good luck!

I managed to track him down and got a reply - just waiting for a follow-up with pricing, etc. The dimensions you mentioned - are they for a heat shield?

If you wade through the pics in the picassa album linked under my signature photo, you will find some photos of the shield. I fabbed it with snips and a nibbler from a $7 stainless "desk trash can" I found at WalMart. 3 tabs hold it under the filter clamp, and about 1/3 of the can radius is cut away to clear the inner fender, leaving enough extra metal to fold over the cut edges for rigidity . Please note that the proper position requires the bracket mod shown in my prior post, so that the assembly is tilted downward and allign with the 2.5" air holes cut in the radiator surround sheet metal and the inner fender. These holes are visible in other pics in the album.

There will be some "cut-and-try" with the can and bending the bracket to get clearances so it will not rattle, but mine has been rattle-free for over 3000 mi.

Nice work.It is much nicer than the shield I attempted to fab.I am going to steal your design and re-do mine. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, you are welcome.

I don't think it's my imagination that this setup actually starts acting like a supercharger at about 45-50mph; the faster, the better, and it uses no engine power. The power difference on hills at road speed is significant, saving some down-shifts compared to the stock setup.

Down-side? You WILL need to clean the filter more often!
