79 2L 4-2-1 on a 78?

Post by garion »

Hi guys.. I have a lead on a 4-2-1 manifold from a 79 with the downpipe (carbed 79, if that makes a difference?)... Would this bolt up to my 78 1800?

I've read several threads without a clear answer.. They mostly degrade into comparing 4 bolt and 6 bolt flanges, and talk about needing to cover up a coolant hole.. Is that something I would need to do also?

The manifold would bolt up, but its EGR piping in the front would hand out into nothing. You could cut it off with a cutoff wheel. You will also need to block the EGR pipe.
The downpipe curves over to the passenger side, to the converter, only the California 1978 did that, the 49 state had no converter and the exhaust went straight back.
If you really want you can make it work, but may not be worth the effort.

Ok, So I would have to block off the EGR pipe...No biggie I think..

My 78 is a non-Cali, and has no cat... Are you saying that all the 79's had a cat, and I would have to repipe everything? That would certainly not make it worth it.

the down pipe will not fit the crossmember correctly as the 2.0 is a little taller and will hit the crossmember or the steering, the bends are in the wrong place. you can easily shorten it or put new motor mounts and maybe shim them up a little. not real bad though

I've put 2 liter manifold/downpipe on several early Spiders and they never interfered with anything.

well some times they do. like i said new motor mounts help. the exhaust designed for a 2l is longer (taller) than the one for a 1.8l, its simple math. the 2.0 block is taller, the crossmember has raised motor mounts. so a reasonable deduction is the pipe has to be longer or it would not fit correctly. i have put 2.0 exhausts on 1800 cars as well with no problems, but on some i have. shifting the engine from side to side in the slots in the mounts can have some effect too. im speaking from having worked on over 5000 fiats in my life. i would care to dare i have dissasembled at least 1500 in my salvage yard and the other i worked at.

for 20 years i worked at and owned a fiat/lancia specialty shop and salvage yard. i restored cars, painted cars, rebuilt everything from front to back , inside and out. sold new and used parts all over the country. bought dealer inventories. and worked on thousands of fiats in the atlanta/north georgia area.
