Carb question for 1608 application

Post by smbaird37 »

My '71 1608 has a DSHA 2 on a dual plane manifold. I have obtained a single plane manifold but I am having a devil of a time figuring out what I can put on it. I would prefer to but something new so I don't have to keep searching for a carb and then have to search for a rebuild kit (not fond of rebuilding cards either). I would also like to keep the manual choke setup. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful!
Thanks!

you could use a 34dmsa, which is the largest single carburator offered by fiat. came stock on a 74 only, you can also get larger carbs , their use depends on other supporting mods

If you want a new carb your best bet is the 32/36DFEV. It has an electric choke and most Fiat vendors (like us) sell them. IT bolts on and your stock air cleaner works on it. Mark sells the EMPI Weber copy, which is a lot cheaper. I think that has electric choke too.
I bet I could ask my carb parts supplier to send one with manual choke if you want a real Weber.

Thanks all! For now I just want a boost from the single plane intake and a less restrictive carb. It would be nice if the same carb would work well if I add a set of modest performance cams down the road. I have found rebuild kits for the DMSA so if I find one available that's a possibility. Otherwise I'll reach out to one of you for more details. I am wondering now if I should reconsider sticking to a manual choke and go electric.... Thanks again

I'd go electric. Means no worries, ever.

A new 34 dmsa for sale.
I have one on my 72 1608. Still putting the car together so don't have first hand experience, but one on a fellows 79 2L made a huge difference.

I would love to but I would need to upgrade my cams. That plus the cost of the IDF setup means I am postponing that performance level until I build up an extra engine I obtained recently. Thanks for your thoughts!

Good idea.
This was a post Mark made by a fellow that had done, I thought, a great write up on the idf's and he mentioned a bigger single carb for a stock engine.

Looks like you are thinking what I am wanting to do. Build a hight performance motor when $$are available. I have a rust free shell and a stock 2L and 1800 on a stand... I'd love to build an engine with the twin idf's, cams, adjustable cam wheels, headers, Mark's ignition... ( I have the pistons)

OK 34 DMS in hand. Looks great and I placed it on the single-plane manifold just to check the fit. Tested opening the throttle and noticed that one lever is hitting the manifold preventing the second venturi from opening. So looks like I'll need a thermal block to stand it off a bit. Does anyone happen to know if a 7mm thermal block will cause clearance issues with the air cleaner and hood? I am guessing (hoping) not...

Don't think so. Take a level and sight along with reference to the distributor. Give a rough guestimation on height issues.

A 4mm spacer provided enough clearance. I don't think I'll have any trouble clearing the hood with that.
