Stock 124 Flywheel
Hello,
With respect to the aftermarket lightened flywheels available, what does a stock flywheel weigh?
Thanks

You are hilarious!
Thanks, just got mine in from Miller's Mule and am excited to get it replaced. It's "only" about 4-5 lbs. (advertised as weighing 14 lbs.) less then stock, but I sure hope I can feel the difference.

Re: Stock 124 Flywheel
so, as Jason has explained o his site (and onthis forum from time-to-time), it;s all about the moment of inertia. It;s all about where that 14 pounds is kept. You will notice that he removes as much material as he feels he can, as far out towards the outside of the circle as possible. the less mass there is on the outside of that circle, the less energy is required to get that mass turning.
you'll notice it.

Re: Stock 124 Flywheel
i have a 12lb steel flywheel that i made years ago, like over 20.. it has survived many race car applications and 100k on the street, the flywheel is 10mm thick all over, 10mm was the thinnest place the factory had at the crankshaft mounting position, therfor i assumed that this thickness would be good for the entire assembly, ... so far so good

Re: Stock 124 Flywheel
There are many different weights as there are many different flywheels. You will find Fiat stock weights will range from about 18lbs to 22lbs (most closer to 21lbs). This depends on many factors, flywheel diameter, ring gear thickness, factory lightening, clutch type (Volumex is different)Daniel wrote:I thought the stock flywheel weight was 22 lbs ?
Personally I prefer to keep the flywheel minimum thickness to 12mm at the friction surface. This is not only because of strength and pitting in the castings, which I have documented but because of a flywheel's heat capacity. When the clutch slips (as it does during shifting) friction is turned into heat, which has to be stored somewhere -- in the flywheel. A flywheel too thin has a lesser heat capacity, and is more prone to hot spots, which cause hard spots, and eventually cause stress cracking.
Anyway, thats all for lightened OEM flywheels. If you want one made from scratch from steel, 6lbs isn't difficult to achieve but thats a totally different animal.

Re: Stock 124 Flywheel
you definatly have some very nice parts, i lust for many of them. once i get my machine shop up and running. automotive, not fabricating. i hope to generate enough expendable income to make a large order. i found a need in my area for a auto machine shop capable of rebuilding cylinder heads. so im filling that need. already purchased most all of the machines needed. should be up and running within a month

Re: Stock 124 Flywheel
As the original poster of this thread, I apologize for not being more specific with my question. I forgot to factor the different size engines used throughout the production run of our spiders and the changes in flywheel weight associated with it.
I have an '80 year (2L), so I suppose it comes closer to thoe 22lbs. Those 8 lbs. sure now sound a lot more appealing then the previous 4-5!
I'll be taking her in on Tuesday to have it installed.
Thanks again to all for your input!
