The PBS article was written based on their experience (Calf.). The 1585 was never imported hence the brothers never saw one. I used to talk to Paul quite a bit when I was racing. Like Steve noted that engine was used extensively in the 80's and 90's. At that point PBS was not in the development mode for the 124 engine.

Wayne,
I agree, I was only speaking for US versions which were limited. I think we are getting to the same point. Based on Steve's comments the 1585 has the same bore spacing as the 1592, 1795, and 1995 cc engines which means the combustion chambers in the head are offset. The only engines with the combustion chambers in the head centered over the bore are the 1492 and 1608cc. Correct?

So, if it were available, the 1585 head with 43.5mm inlet valves would be a good way to go.

Fiat Mac, Correct.

I think the point of the original question was if going to a later madel head would be good. In my opinion (and many others) he should use the original head with maybe the 43.5 valves. If he could get a 1585 head if would be worth it for development however for a street engine it is hard to beat the OEM for the 1608.
