72 Spider throttle linkage firewall grommet?

Post by Raze »

When I pulled the carb during a recent headgasket job I was careful to remove all the linkages and clips, however I believe there was some sort of plastic grommet at the firewall where it comes through the black rubber ring, I want to say this part was grey and looked 'T' shaped when viewed from the side. Am I crazy or was there such a part that managed to find a home behind the starter (I really don't want to pull that damn thing...

yes there is a gret nylon piece of the throttle linkage that goes in the rubber grommet on the firewall, it does resemble a t from the side view

As a quick update, I found an interesting and pretty sweet replacement for the nylon bushing. I had some stainless steel M10 hex flanged nuts and after grinding down the hex side to make it circular it fits perfectly into the rubber grommet in the firewall, and holds the throttle linkage nice and tight and centered. Wwithout the bushing the linkage droops and the spring can pop through the rubber grommet at the firewall and the linkage could come loose while driving (closing throttles). If you try this at home make sure it's SS so the linkage and spring don't decide to rust to the flanged side of the nut.
