engine

Post by fiat218 »

what can i do to a 1438 to boost up the hp? i have a 1608 here too, so what can be done, i did read that the 1608 head can work on the 1438 and increase it , so with out doing any internal work, would that be it ?
just asking

You could put the 1608 top end on it, but you would be a lot better off to freshen up the 1608 and drop it in, it is a much better package than the 1438. The 1438 can just barely get out of it's own way, the 1608 can really move, at higher speeds it is vastly superior. PB

I would rebuild the 1608, put a decent header/exhaust system on it, get good manifold and properly match the ports to either a 34 ADF or 32/36 carb. If you can, use a Marelliplex or other electronic ignition. This will really make a big difference over stock trim without going into pistons/cams, etc.

go the 1608 with twin IDF carbs and 4-2-1 exhaust just like the Euro version
Below is an example out of a BC coupe (minus original exhaust)

They come up on ebay every now and then, an example in Oz

If you can find the complete set up would be ideal, eg linkages and turtle back air cleaner

1800 will make more power and like the 1608 has a good bore to stroke ratio, IMO, 1438 is just too small, 1592 has a bad bore to stroke ratio. PB
