Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
I just bought a pertronix MRLS1 ignitior system and I was wandering if a Flamethrower coil (60000 Volts 3ohms) would make a difference. I have presently a spider 1977 with blue bosch coil. What is the voltage and resistance of the bosch blue coil? I´m new to the forum so any help will be welcome.

check the coil resistence closly, it must match the specs for the ignitor, my blue coil did not

Check the Summit website, they are one of the few vendors that list the primary and secondary voltage specifications for the coils.
Re: Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
Thanks for the advices. I checked on the summit web site but it doesn´t tell me anything about the blue coil. They sell it but that it... On the pertronix site they sau that you need at leat 1 ohm of primary resistance. What do you think? Should I get the flame trower 40 000Volts, it has a primary of 1.5 ohm. At least that what pertronix recommend.

I'm running the Bosch blue coil with the Pertronix module; works great. The distributor specialist who recurved my dizzy recommended this coil.
Re: Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
baltobernie, did you see any change with the pertronix ignitor? They say it increase the spark, but does it? I still would like to know the primary resistance and the voltage of the blue coil, can anybody give me this info?
Thanks again for all your input.

Re: Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
Interesting web site, Matt. He asks as many questions as he answers, however.
I bought my coil from Pegasus, and it is bright blue like the "good" ones shown in the link. Pegasus says that this coil is good for 6000 RPM, and my car makes no additional power beyond 5500. I don't have a comparison for Pertronix vs. points, as the dizzy upgrade was part of an engine rebuild. Nobody around here has one of the old Sun machines that displays spark waveform and amplitude on a CRT. Pertronix claims that their modules provide a precise spark duration depending on RPM, but I have no way of verifying this. My principal reason for converting was to maintain consistent ignition timing. The only other modification planned is a heat shield for the coil.

I was running the Pertronix ignition module and the Flame Thrower 40K coil. Was very happy with the set up. Changed over to Mark's distributorless system to solve a hood clearance issue.

Thanks Matt for the link. Sorry baltobernie about asking as many questions as I answers, I was thinking as I wrote.
Thanks again all off you for your input it´s always useful to me.
I think, I´m gone try the flame-thrower, the 40000 volts must make a differents somewhere..., and for 40$ it´s not so bad.

Have a good one.

This topic is on points setup only correct?
1978 Spyder 1800 make that 2L! Finally making real progress!
Re: Anybody tried, Pertronix flame-thrower coil?
yep.
Well, at least that what I have right now.
