Toe Alignment

Yesterday I was turning the tie rod sleeve in order to align the toe of the car but the sleeve was just unscrewing from one tie rod and screwing into the other without actually adjusting the toe. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need new sleeve? I thought the sleeve was threaded so that when turned it would push both tie rods out or pull both in.

Your thoughts are correct. What has happened is that someone has put the wrong tie rod on 1 end. There should be a right hand thread on one end and a left hand on the other end,

My vague recollection is that the inner tie rod end is a right hand thread (normal thread) and the outer tie rod end is a left hand thread.

You should fix this asap. Could be dangerous. Seems like one steering ball joint is held in the sleeve not by the thread but just by the clamp alone. Threads are crossed.

As Nut124 said you will need a sleeve also. I didn't think about this the first time through.
