A Practical Steering Wheel Hub Adaptor

So I know there's already a bunch of threads regarding steering wheel replacement but none of them seem to address the issue of crappy hub adaptors. Since my car is a 76' I had to purchase a hub adaptor to install my new steering wheel. What isn't clear, however, is that the hub adaptor is several inches tall! Is everyone else okay with the wheel sticking up in their face or am I missing something here? If those tall hub adaptors are truly the only option, I have a machine shop in my garage and could easily turn my own hub adaptor on my lathe. Since I can't easily manufacture the internal spline shape that actually grips the hub, I would cut that out of my old wheel, turn it down, and weld it into my custom adaptor. I just thought I'd check in here before I fully commit to this project...

I'm not sure exactly which hub adapter you're referring to and whether this would be possible, but how about cutting it down and redrilling the screw holes? Might be simpler than having to cut and weld.

Unfortunately, the adaptor tapers off quickly so it's not a large enough diameter for me to drill and tap new holes. I thought of just welding a separate plate to it but the adaptor hub is made of crappy pot steel and thus won't produce a strong enough weld (photo shows a few test welds).
