(not so) new project! barn find '72

Post by htchevyii »

Well I was relieved to finally get the 82 finished so I could relax, but now I found a deal too good to pass up! The '72 was driven into the barn in 1984 and is still there now! I pick it up Wed. The car was freshly painted just before it was parked, I'll have to see it it will clean up. Let the fun begin!

Great find! Now you'll be able to see the difference between the 82s and the charm of the early models. 8)

No, she's the proud owner of the '82. I was going to autocross it, but she said it's too nice so I got my own.

I didn't buff the hood, because I'm going to paint it semi-gloss black.

Those look like higher compression pistons than original, don't they? Here's a pic of one from my 72:

I think so too, someone on Mira thought they were 9.8 c/r. I blew the engine apart tonight, good news/bad news. The engine looks pretty fresh, but looks to have had a thrown rod & has a sleeved cyl.

new 1438

Post by htchevyii »

So the 1608 was at max overbore & loose piston to bore clearance, so I went back & bought some more engines from the p.o. of the car. Came back with a 1438 & 1756. The 1756 was wrecked with only 17000 miles, but looks to have ingested water before being pulled. Maybe a good core, but definitely not a runner. The 1438 was mildly modded and the guy actually had a dry lake record with it at one time in a 124 wagon. Looks like it had a few oil leaks, I couldn't tell it had wrinkle painted cam covers until after cleaning, but don't worry I've got a nice set of bead blasted alum ones. He sold me a new set of oversize pistons & rings too. Tomorrow I'm off to the engine shop, wish me luck.

It looks like you're well on your way! Did the 1438 come with a flywheel? There's somethig different between the 1438 and 1608 flywheels...bolt size maybe (can't remember) but I hope it doesn't pose a problem.
