there is another thread somewhere, it is an accesories power socket, there was an option for an inspection lamp that used this to power it.
There should be a 3rd ground wire, (I'm sure my power supply wires were red not purple, but that is from memory???)

Apparently it is quite rare to have one in the car so you should consider leaving it intact! Rare as hen's teeth I am told.
