Canvas top rehab

Post by jimrearden »

I bought a new caribou canvas top and installed it about 10 years ago.
The canvas is still in great shape, but the material that attaches the top to the bows is disintegrating to the point that the top is no longer attached to the bows. They have come loose from the top and also are unraveling from around the bows. Any thoughts on the best way to restore the attachments?

One fix is to use new strips of canvas or other material attached by commercial grade contact cement. I would first apply a strip to the top underside of the top with the rail centered over it. Once dry then apply cement to the bow and strip then wrap over the bow allowing just a little slack for movement. This is pretty much how the factory bows are made. Just a matter of cutting the correct size etc. From your post I'm not sure if you mean the original canvas is toast or it is just coming loose due to the glue aging. Either way good quality contact cement is the answer.
