I just faced this for my first belt change. It took several tries but I a) pryed the tensioner back with a screwdriver rather than pushing with my hands as I had been doing, which bought me a few microns, and b) when the belt was almost over the tensioner but not quite, I turned the passenger side cam pulley with my hand towards the tensioner just enough to give the belt a little more slack, and it went on.

The way i do it is i install the belt without the spring and put tension on the spring using scrwdriver after the belt is install.
