If that is a heavy braided wire it is probably the ground wire from the starter (and therefore also the engine) to the chassis and needs to be in place for the circuits to work properly. Can you post a picture of what broke?

well now i know i have to get an other starter this one would probably be just fine if the wire wasn't broke off at the starter motor now. its the braided wire.

The braided wire that is broke off at the starter motor is the short lead going to solenoid .

Not familiar with that, but it is not the engine ground wire.
