Relocating Alternator on 1978

Post by dsnyder »

Anybody ever relocate the alternator to the passenger side where the smog pump used to be?

Any reason not to do this? I know it is near the exhaust manifold but on mine with AC, it is down below the AC compressor and it is basically impossible to get two without removing the AC compressor and emptying out the system.

Thoughts... suggestions?

Thanks!!!

There should be two studs protruding from the block on the right side. That is the position the alternator lived in on earlier cars. You should be able to move it there fairly easily. You will need to adjust the wiring to get there, perhaps someone with an early loom they are not using will be able to assist you.

I'm not sure about putting the alternator where the smog pump is but you can easily relocate it at the bottom of the engine on the exhaust side. The problem with this is that the alternator will line up with the rear (smaller) groove on the crank pulley. You can either get a different crank and water pump pulley or use an offset alternator pulley. You cannot space the alternator forward enough to utilize the crank pulley middle groove using OE brackets.

These are the brackets you'll need to mount the alternator on the exhaust side:

The wiring is simple, just run a large wire (10 awg or 8 awg if you're running an alternator with output > 65A) from the alternator to the starter/battery wire. You'll also need to make an extension for the small exciter wire to the exhaust side.

Thats about it!

I relocated mine to the passenger side using Jason's pulleys.
