Carpet Install w/ Dimensions & Pics

Post by Foster48x »

Hello all!
Let me start out by saying thanks to all of you who make this forum a great resource. I've learned allot from you guys/gals so
I wanted to give a little back. Here's a detailed write up of my custom carpet install with dimension and pics.

The install was done on a 1980 FI. The measurements were taken without the factory insulation and the original passenger foam
insert in place (there's a pic of the insert in the high res link). In place of carpet padding and insulation is 1/8" thick sound deadening material front to back.

Carpet Selection:
I went with an inexpensive black loop indoor/outdoor carpet from Lowes (ST210 Catalina/890 Ebony). $5.88 a linear foot off of a 12' roll. I purchased 6 linear feet and after cutting the interior carpet I will still have enough to do the trunk. Also from what I've read here it closely resembles the original factory carpet.

Supplies:
I used a good straight edge ruler, good pair of scissors, a marker, and a roll of masking paper. I found the 24" wide masking paper worked perfect (its cheap too).

Carpet Templates:
Here is a link to all of the original high resolution pics of the templates for you to download.

It's a little difficult to see the measurements but here are the 640x480 pics of the templates with a few notes.

Back Seat (Back)
I cut this one a little long on one side for extra coverage over the deep drivers side rear seat pan. Doing both sides short works also.
Image
Drivers Front (DF)
You'll notice that some of the curvy dimensions are missing on this one and the Passenger Front template. I found it easier to do a rough cut on paper then lay the paper in the car and do the curves and small cut-outs.

Drivers Inside (DI)

Drivers Outside (DO)

Drivers Rear (DR)

Rear Center Hump (Hump)

Passenger Front (PF)

Passenger Inside (PI)

Passenger Rear (PR)

Passenger Outside (PO)

Here's a pic of the completed templates laying on the carpet to be cut out.

Here's the cut carpet. This pic was taken before I made some additional changes to the cuts so it may not exactly match the individual templates.

Finished product! The installation was pretty straight forward however you will have to trim a few pieces here and there after
its in the car.

I'm sure I missed something so if you need more detail on any of it let me know.
Hope this helps those of you (like me) who weren't lucky enough to pick up a vehicle with new carpet in it.

A large part of me is very tempted to draw this up in CAD and create life size printable pdf's which would only require a plotter or trip to kinkos :)

Looks good, I think you should sew a black binding around the front and back floor pieces so the white glue of the carpet doesnt show.

Pope,
Your right sewing trim onto the floor pieces would clean it up. It was in my original plan but after installing the seats, center console and rail along the door most of the visible seams are covered. I do plan on making padded/ trimmed floor mats out of the same carpet to cover the rest of the seams on the front driver and passenger floors. I'll post up the dimensions to the floor mats when they're done.

That would be the way to go.

I would certainly kick in to get pdf's done that I could run off at Kinkos. I need mats, but mine are in such poor condition that I can't make good templates from them. If you need more incentive, maybe others would be interested (besides Mike and I).

Sounds good Josh. I have the carpet waiting to be cut when I get to the inside.

I started on the project, but it will take me some more time drafting before I am done. Unfortunetly I have some other things to take care of today, maybe tomorrow I can get things finished up.

p.s. DF and Back just for starters..

I got caught up in a few jobs, tomorrow between watching ALMS and powder coating fiat bits I will sit at the laptop and churn out some more drawings.
