Rear U-Joint

Post by josh76 »

I was taking off my drive shaft so that I can replace the flex joint, center support bearing and U-Joints.

Has anyone experienced the rear yoke and rear driveshaft yoke getting peened over as if it made contact something while running? The universal bearing bore in both the drive shaft and rear end yokes are visibly out of round.

Looks like I will be needing a new drive shaft when that universal goes. . . .

the only time I've seen that is if the ujoint broke and the shaft flung around beating on stuff including the ground. Is the entire yoke misshaped or just the outside edge?

It looks as if 1 of 2 things happened

a. The joint was pivoted past some critical angle such that the yoke attached to the rear-end contacted the drive shaft yoke and peened over the edges where the bearing resides

or

b. The yokes made contact with the underbody (as evidenced by the seemingly negative form of spinning yokes on the underside of the car)

Or a combination of those two.

Ohh well. . . luckily the bearings feel okay and I was able to put a new zerk fitting onto it.
