Aftermarket Steering Wheels

I know this topic has been discussed, and I did do a search which turned up this thread:

My question, after reading through the thread, is whether the hub on later model cars is 5-hole or 6-hole? And can someone confirm for me that whichever it is, if I get a steering wheel with the appropriate hole pattern, I can use a later model hub to attach the aftermarket wheel to my earlier model steering column ('76 single nut attachment).

Steve, my 79 is a 6 screw wheel. I put a Personnel Fitapaldi wheel on my car ad used an adapter hub to match the offsets for the 2 different 6 hole layouts. So 5 hole will need some adapter made.

The later ones, (my '82) have a six bolt hub that is compatible with Momo etc. I got a nice Italian wood wheel on Ebay and it works perfect. I was even able to reuse the oe FIAT horn buton.

Momo has a wheel called the Prototipo that looks period-correct for the Spider, and it's a six bolt wheel that fits the stock Spider hub (79 and up). We're working on a deal to carry them after the first of the year

Thanks for the info. So the next question is - does anyone have a six-bolt hub that is littering up their garage that they want to make me a deal on so I can buy myself a six-hole steering wheel? I'll post this in the parts wanted section too.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I didn't see any on ebay today - there are some similar ones from Japan, but I am hesitant to order from overseas. There are some nice mahogany wheels that I'm interested in as well - they run around $100 to $110 with shipping, which seems like a good price compared to what I've seen in stores. They offer a 13 3/4" diameter or a 12 3/4". I'm looking for something a little smaller than the stock 15" wheel. What diameter is yours, and are you happy with the feel of it?

Beautiful car, by the way. How's the barn find coming along?

Steve, mine is 12 3/4", Comusa Italy. I got it on Ebay used for about $50.00. It was listed as fitting a Toyota Starlet, I think that kept the price down. I like it, but my wife sometimes complains of high steering effort when parking. It must not bother her too much 'cause when I offered to swap it with the larger stock one from my '72 she politely declined.

The '72 is stalled right now. Mark is coming thru with the bellhousing I need. I only have a one car garage at the house so with winter here I can't do much until I get the '82 to my storage garage and get the '72 inside. Too many cars & too little room. I redid a run down garage at my Grandfather's so I can store My '64 Nova and a Spider there. I hope to get back to it soon, there's not much else to do after work in the winter.

Excellent. I wanted a smaller size, so I went with the 12 3/4" mahogany 3-spoke. I like the proportions of yours, so it's nice to know I got the right size. Also, I like the dark color of the mahogany, and will probably do my dash to match.
