Well, if it's any consolation, I once rebuilt a transmission and put everything back in the car, but it made a funny "siren like" noise when driving. I went back to my apartment to think it over, and it was then that I noticed the mainshaft spacer washer laying on the dining room table, which of course I had forgotten to install (the spacer washer, not the dining room table). It all had to come apart again. Sigh...

This sounds like the sound we've talked about a week or two ago. Can you elaborate a bit on the noise you've been hearing back then? I've just taken my drive shaft off to replace the support bearing (which did have some play, as you said). Just want to be sure I don't miss anything...

Hi Mark (in the air), the noise that I mentioned was definitely caused by a washer / spacer that I forgot to install on the transmission, and it was fixed as soon as I put this part back in the transmission where it belonged.

This mistake was made by me back around 1987, so my memory is very poor. It was a siren like sound, and the frequency rose as the car (transmission) speeded up. My expectation is that driveshaft issues would be more like clunks or rattles or clicks, but not a high frequency whine. But, if your carrier bearing is going bad, that could definitely cause a whine and even a squeal as the lubrication slowly dries up.

Oh wow that is a long time ago. I was only a baby back then!

I'll try to get everything back together over the weekend and I'll let you know what the result is in the other topic.
