What is the sensor for that this loose wire connects to?

1981 Fiat 2000

checking all the Hose and Wires in the engine bay and I found this loose wire connection.
It branches off from the same wire loom that has the fuel injector wires.
I found the connection to a Plug/Sensor that is under the fuel rail/intake
I got the wire plugged into it but the connector is kind of broken and missing the spring clip wire, so it may not stay on. What is the sensor for and how important is it for that wire to stay connected ?

I had to remove the Alternator and bracket which gave just enough room to reach in there to get the wire reconnected.
It did not want to slide any farther onto the sensor than what you can see in the picture. Not sure if it is making good contact or not.

The sensor is a thermal time switch that activates the cold start valve. If the engine temperature is below something like 90 degrees the cold start valve supplies extra fuel to the engine for faster starting. The cold start valve only operates for around 10 seconds. Its operation is similar to a choke on a carburetor.

OK good Thanks, so not real critical, just for better cold starting. Hoping to get the old Spider running soon. It had been parked for the last 5 or 6 years by the previous owner when the Starter Quit working. I found that the Red wire had fallen off of the Starter Solenoid and have reattached it so it does crank over now. Now I need to reinstall the gauges and am waiting for a new Fuel Filter to be delivered before I try to Start it up.

In the mean time I got my Metric set all organized.

I wish I’ve mastered how to post pictures here…Anyway, looks like you are ready to tackle the sound deadening, if not, I highly recommended. And by doing so, you’ll see if there’s any rust spots you’ve to remediate. No need to spend lots on the deadening material, you can get a good self stick foam material about 3/16” in the duct aisle at Home Depot. And you might opt to spray the floors first with rubberized painting, the one sold for truck bedding. I took this route. Made a hell of an improvement. My $0.02.

Easy to post pictures go to imgur.com which is a free photo sharing site
set up a free account
download photos from your computer or phone to your imgur photo album
Then Copy the BBCode on the photo you want to post and then paste it into the forum comment space ..works like magic
It will show up like code but when you click preview or post it turns into the photo

Yeah, the dash looks great.. doing that is great, since we look at it so much.

Not sure I would be able to find any tool with that kind of organization. work would get done too fast

Thanks. It’s a vinyl burlwood veneer…the same stuff used on premium Japanese cars, like Lexus or Infinity. I wanted to give it a more classy look. Since that picture was taken, I have replaced the brushed aluminum rings with chrome ones and replaced the fuel, water, and oil pressure gauges with the old style where there’s writing in Italian.
